During prep school at Westminster School for Wayward Boys in Simsbury, Connecticut he learned black and white photography and darkroom development for the yearbook. While attending college at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach Florida he began photographing surfers on the beach and became a color photographer for the yearbook. In 1971 He moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida to fly co-pilot on a LearJet for a private owner. Through his travels to the Southwestern United States he developed a great appreciation for the natural beauty of this area.

Burt Hesselson, a native of Elmira New York, was late to the photographic hobby – getting into it seriously only 3 years before he retired here in 1984. Starting off with a basic course in photography and one in black and white prints, in the intervening 20 plus years Burt has managed to squeeze a whole lifetime of photography in and is considered one of the top photographers in our area. He has had one man exhibitions in several museums and five of his photographs have been placed in their permanent collections. Many of his prints hang in homes and offices all over the world.

Burt switched to digital photography in 2001 and is currently using a digital SLR, the Canon Rebel XTi. Burt shoots in the RAW format and uses a beta version of Adobe Photoshop software, CS3, to process his digital images.

Burt and his wife Harriet love to travel and have visited 64 other countries. The most recent is Cuba. Burt is almost never without a camera and he loves to record the beautiful and interesting things of this world and especially the children and adults that make up the human species. It gives him great pride to share his images and knowledge and expertise with others who appreciate or need it.
